Through PDC funding, the district has acquired approximately 50 to 60 Flip digital cameras. The specific model is the "Flip Ultra, Second Generation". Thirty of these cameras are available for loan from the PDC (contact Carolyn Tinsley or Martha Erbland for details). Approximately two dozen additional cameras have been provided to "Tech Mentors" in each building (the "Tech Mentor" program was framed by Erin Ells while still with the PDC, and while the participants have been appointed, the program isn't fully implemented at present).
Despite the fact that the Flip Cameras come with version 4.x of the "FlipShare" software preloaded, we are making an effort to standardize on Version 4.5. The software is also available locally at the following location: S:\Departments\Instructional Technology\Flip Cam software
Tech Services is investigating other installation options (insert updates here as they become available).
It is important to note that when FlipShare is installed, it will AUTOMATICALLY (without prompting) place the library directory on the H drive of the installing person. Clearly, this must be corrected in order for the software to function properly for the intended user(s). Do the following to relocate the "Library" directory to the c:\ drive:
1. Open the FlipShare application
2. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences...
3. Select the "Library" tab and click the "Change Directory" button
4. Using the following as a guide, locate and highlight the "FlipShare" directory: --------------------- My Computer
--------------------------- Local Disk (C:)
------------------------------- Program Files
------------------------------------ Flip Video
----------------------------------------- FlipShare 5. Shut down and restart the FlipShare application
PLEASE NOTE that FlipShare 5.0 has been released, and users of 4.5 will be nagged to install/upgrade to it. In an effort towards consistency, we wish to have users continue to use only version 4.5. Version 5.0 takes away a very helpful and important feature -- the ability to export videos in WMV format. On;y when a video is in WMV format can it be brought into (the free) Windows MovieMaker for editing.
Please be advised that neither teachers nor students have privileges to install camera or the FlipShare software. Only those with administrative privileges can accomplish these installs. (In other words, simply lending a camera to a teacher or student, without installing the hardware software for them, will not enable them to transfer, edit, or publish their video(s).
